Dr. Nilanjan Chakraborty

Dr. Nilanjan Chakraborty is Scientist in the ICMR institute, National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata working in the field of virology for over a decade. Dr. Chakraborty has work experiences in the fields of microbiology and virology. He graduated in 1984, gained his Masters in Botany with Microbiology in 1987 from Kalyani University, and did his Ph. D. from Kalyani University in 1995. He joined ICMR Virus Unit, Kolkata as Scientist C in the year 2003 and his current position is Scientist E in the virus research laboratory of NICED.

Upon joining Virus Unit, Dr. Chakraborty committed himself on learning the distribution of different opportunistic infections prevalent among the HIV infected patient groups of Eastern India. Furthermore, he extended the work to deduce the drug susceptibility profile of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from HIV-infected and uninfected Pulmonary Tuberculosis patients which provided some significant observations regarding the prevalence and rise of XDR-TB and MDR-TB strains in Eastern India. His research to apprehend the frequency of multiple herpes virus infection among the HIV seropositive patients provided a clear insight in identifying the baseline values of demographic and behavioral factors associated with these opportunistic infections.

His effort is to understand and decipher the epidemiological prevalence pattern, socio-demographic, clinical characteristics and molecular phylogeny of Human cytomegalovirus among the infected patients of Eastern Indian population. Currently he is studying the molecular characterization of congenital rubella infection (among the pediatric population) and Chikungunya infection.

Dr. Chakraborty has trained a number of students about the essential concepts of virus research. Currently three students are registered for Ph.D. and one is doing post doctoral research under his guidance. One of his students has been awarded Ph.D. and is now doing post-doctoral work. He is the author of a large number of research papers in peer-reviewed international journals and also book chapter on the aspect of Virology.
